Romans 15:1-33 KJV  We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.  (2)  Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.  (3)  For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.  (4)  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.  (5)  Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:  (6)  That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  (7)  Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.  (8)  Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:  (9)  And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.  (10)  And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.  (11)  And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.  (12)  And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.  (13)  Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.  (14)  And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.  (15)  Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God,  (16)  That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.  (17)  I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God.  (18)  For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed,  (19)  Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.  (20)  Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation:  (21)  But as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see: and they that have not heard shall understand.  (22)  For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you.  (23)  But now having no more place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come unto you;  (24)  Whensoever I take my journey into Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first I be somewhat filled with your company.  (25)  But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints.  (26)  For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.  (27)  It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.  (28)  When therefore I have performed this, and have sealed to them this fruit, I will come by you into Spain.  (29)  And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.  (3

Romans 15:1-2 KJV  We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.  (2)  Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.

According to the Christian History Institute;

The first major division of the Bible into chapters came in the 13th century. Stephen Langton, a professor at the University of Paris and later Archbishop of Canterbury, is widely credited with devising the chapter system in the early 1200s.

The 1560 Geneva Bible was the first printed bible to use the chapter and verse system in their Bible.

In my opinion, dividing the books of the bible up into chapters and verses is a good and a bad thing. It’s great when you need to get to a specific point, but it’s terrible for what it does to doctrine. “Sound bite Christianity” has promoted every type of false doctrine imaginable. When we take a verse and preach a text, often it’s taking it out of the context of the entire passage.

I’m saying this because it is clear from verse 1, we are continuing in the same thought the apostle had in chapter 14;

Romans 14:21-23 KJV  It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.  (22)  Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.  (23)  And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Verse 2 ends the conversation begun in chapter 14.

I am not trying to say the chapter verse system isn’t useful, I am just cautioning you, when you are studying your bible, be mindful of the context. The chapter verse system is handy, it just can also be misleading.

Romans 15:3 KJV  For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.

This is referencing Psalm 69, an undeniably Messianic Psalm.

Romans 15:4 KJV  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Paul tells the church at Corinth;

1 Corinthians 10:1-11 KJV  Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;  (2)  And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;  (3)  And did all eat the same spiritual meat;  (4)  And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.  (5)  But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.  (6)  Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.  (7)  Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.  (8)  Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.  (9)  Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.  (10)  Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.  (11)  Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

It’s all profitable, even if it’s not written directly to us, it’s still profitable. I don’t understand, when it is so clear that all of Israel was baptized unto Moses in the Red Sea, and Moses tell Israel in Deuteronomy 18:15 The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

Why can’t people see that if Israel was baptized unto their deliverer, why wouldn’t you want to be baptized into your Messiah? It is clearly the pattern given in the book of Acts. A topic for another time.

Romans 15:5 KJV  Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:

Speaking of like minded, John tells us in 1 John 2:3-6 KJV  And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.  (4)  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.  (5)  But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.  (6)  He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Romans 15:6-7 KJV  That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  (7)  Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Now the apostle is going to change gears on us,

Romans 15:8 KJV  Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:

When we read the gospels, we can see that Jesus and His disciples once ventured into Syria, and He evidently went into the decapolis (10 cities) where he healed the man with the “legion” of devils. Other than these brief visits Jesus spent His time in Galilee and Judea amongst the Jewish people.

Romans 15:9-12 KJV  And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.

Jesus told His listeners in John 10:16 KJV  And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

The gentiles being grafted in was never a plan B. The Father knew from the beginning, before the was a Jew, even before there was an Israel, He knew from the beginning that He was going to have 1 people, 1 fold.

Revelation 13:8 KJV  And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him (speaking of the beast in prophecy), whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

He already knew everyone of us!

Romans 15:13-21 KJV  Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Paul is quoting Isaiah 52:13-15 KJV  Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.  (14)  As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:  (15)  So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

Romans 15:22-33 KJV  For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you. (30)  Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;  (31)  That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints;  (32)  That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed.  (33)  Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea

There’s much debate about how many times Paul was sent to Rome. It’s not something I study much on, this is about Yeshua, not Paul, but it is interesting to think, did Paul get to Rome the first time in shackles, or was it just on his way to Rome? We do have pretty good indication that he eventually died there, but I suppose we can ask him after the resurrection!

Colossians 2:9 KJV  For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
